Where to vote? And many local reasons to vote

PALM DESERT, Calif. -

Voters will cast ballots Today in perhaps the most-contested and costly local contest.

The race for the 36th Congressional district ends today pitting Democrat Raul Ruiz against his Republican incumbent, Mary Bono Mack.

Voters in the Coachella Valley will also cast ballots today for candidates for two state legislative seats.

In the 42nd Assembly District race, Republican Assemblyman Brian Nestande of Palm Desert is being challenged by Democrat Mark Orozco, a Beaumont resident and teacher.

In the 56th Assembly District race, Democratic Assemblyman V. Manuel Perez of Indio will face Republican challenger Corky Reynaga-Emett, an Indio resident and president of an insurance brokerage company.

Voters in a several Coachella Valley cities will also weigh in on local races, including:

-- Coachella Mayor Eduardo Garcia is being challenged by businessman Carmen Manriquez;

-- La Quinta Mayor Don Adolph is running against businessman Robert Sylk; and

-- Cathedral City Mayor Kathy De Rosa is running against John David Kauffman and 911 director Chip Yarborough.

City Council seats are also up for grabs in Indio and Indian Wells, as are seats on the Palm Springs, Coachella Valley and Desert Sands unified school district boards and the Desert Community College District board.

The polls were scheduled to open this morning at 7 a.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m.
