RIVERSIDE, Calif. -

The owner of four dogs, all chihuahua mixes, is looking for answers after his pets were apparently killed by someone Sunday morning.

According to John Welsh with Riverside Animal Control, the owner of the dogs called to report the case of animal cruelty after two of his dogs were stabbed to death at their home in the 2000 block of Vermont Avenue in Riverside's Eastside neighborhood.

The other two dogs were also stabbed and had such severe injuries that Animal Control Officer Dylan Gates, who was called to the scene, suggested they be signed over for humane euthanasia.

The attacks happened sometime in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to Welsh.

The dog owner said he had a recent run-in with a man he described as a transient. The man and dog owner argued and the man allegedly threatened him by saying he was going to 'come back'.

Officials said the four dogs were taken to the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley where a veterinarian will perform autopsies on the animals; a standard in all animal cruelty investigations involving death.

The Riverside Police Department is handling the investigation.
